Ringier is selling<\/a> almost its entire Hungarian portfolio\u2014including one of the most visited news portals and several women\u2019s magazines\u2014to the Indamedia Group. The transaction is particularly significant because it transfers ownership of the tabloid <\/span>Blikk<\/span><\/i>, one of Hungary\u2019s most widely used news sources, to Indamedia, a company closely aligned with the government. Indamedia owns, among other outlets, Index, which has become part of the pro-government propaganda machine following its acquisition by Indamedia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With this deal, government-linked ownership becomes dominant in the tabloid press market. Gaining control over the newspaper\u2014especially just five months before the elections\u2014provides an opportunity for government propaganda to reach social groups that are otherwise difficult to access through other channels. All this is happening at a time when major online platforms banned the publication of political advertisements.<\/span><\/p>\n

Update:<\/b> As a direct consequence of the acquisition, Blikk’s editor-in-chief Iv\u00e1n Zsolt Nagy and P\u00e9ter Szigeti, Ringier’s\u00a0 head of innovation and content development, are both leaving the company.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
