This year, Direkt36 is among the recipients of the Free Media Award, an international journalism prize jointly awarded by Germany’s ZEIT Stiftung Bucerius and Norway’s Fritt Ord Foundation. The award honors journalists and media outlets “in recognition of their valiant investigative journalism under exceedingly difficult circumstances”.
Direkt36 was recognized for its “powerful in-depth journalism.” The announcement highlights the success of their documentary The Dynasty, which demonstrates how the Orbán family’s economic empire was born. The film has already generated 3.8 million views on YouTube.
In addition to Direkt36, this year’s laureates include the media platform Gwara Media from Ukraine, Georgian journalist and media founder Mzia Amaglobeli, photographer and photojournalist Alexandra Astakhova from Russia, the Belarusian Investigative Center and journalist Nargiz Absalamova from Azerbaijan.
